Benefits of Reiki
Reiki is a healing technique that is seen as a holistic therapy. It was developed in the 1920s by a Japanese Buddhist named Mikao Usui. Also called “palm healing” and “hands-on healing,” Reiki centers on the idea of energy transference. The word Reiki means “universal life energy,” and Reiki practitioners learn to tune in to this energy frequency to help their patients. The Reiki practitioner channels healing energy into the patient. The concept of “Qi” or “Chi” is central to Reiki – the energy force present in all living things.
How Does Reiki Work?
When a person is sick, injured, or mentally distressed, his or her Chi is unbalanced or depleted. The healing touch provided by Reiki practitioners intends to reopen blocked Chi channels and restore the patient’s energy through touch. Reiki therapy offers relaxation and a human connection that is therapeutic in countless situations. Although Reiki is not a replacement for modern medical procedures, it can support them and provide a more holistic healing experience.
Ultimately, Reiki offers stress relief, pain management, and human connection for people suffering from various physical and emotional ailments. The American Cancer Society has recognized the benefits of Reiki therapy for cancer patients, as it has been proven to:
- Relieve emotional stress
- Alleviate tension
- Help patients relax and cope with difficult situations
- Promote overall well-being
What to Expect at a Reiki Session
A Reiki practitioner will ask patients about their general health and reasons for seeking treatment before creating a treatment plan. In a comfortable setting, often with dimmed lights and soothing music, the practitioner will place his or her hands on or above the patient’s body in order to move and balance energy. The goal is to encourage physical healing and release energy blocks.
Remember to drink plenty of water after a Reiki session. Most practitioners agree that patients should schedule at least three sessions in order to receive the full benefits of Reiki therapy.
